Sometimes a quick vacation with a low-key atmosphere is just what the family needs. This is exactly what Fargo, North Dakota offers families traveling with children.

There are many restaurants to choose from and stores to shop at in Fargo. With young kids though, it is not always easy. Most children do not have the stamina or interest for a long shopping trip. Make sure to plan visits to a few places that kids would enjoy. This will make eating out and shopping much easier.

Hotels with Water Parks in Fargo

Fargo has many hotels from which to choose. Swimming in the pool is always a fun part of the vacation. Many of the hotels offer great pools, but there are a few hotels like the Best Western Kelly Inn and Suites as well as the Holiday Inn of Fargo, that offer water parks which are especially geared for younger kids but still offer enough interest for older ones.

Picking a Kid Friendly Restaurant in Fargo

There are many chain and local restaurants in Fargo. Speed of service and variety are important. Space Aliens Grill and Bar is one place that is especially fun. The restaurant in Fargo looks like a space ship from the outside and the alien decor is carried throughout. The menu offers a good variety. There are also arcade games to play, win tickets and cash them in for prizes.

Where to Shop with Kids in Fargo

The West Acres Mall has many shops and just off the food court is the Touchstone Energy Dinosaur Playland where youngsters up to about five years of age can burn up some energy. There is a small aquarium in the mall and making stops like this or at the pet store will help break up the shopping trip for kids.

Other shopping stops that would interest kids:

  • Barnes and Noble is a bookstore with a large children’s section where kids can read a book and relax.
  • Scheels is a large sporting store offering a gigantic Ferris wheel inside the store to ride, as well as interactive sports, racing and hunting games that can be played on the second floor.

Things for Kids to See and Do in Fargo

The Red River Zoo is easily accessible and in close proximity. The zoo is small but worth the visit. Included in their many animals to see is a Bactrian camel born this past spring. Their website lists babies born and exhibits as they occur. Viewings of wolf feedings where they hunt and seek for food is offered on weekends and watching from inside the trapper’s cabin, with angled windows, gives a close up view.

The zoo also houses on its premises a restored carousel donated by the Diederich family. Go for a ride, buy some cotton candy or popcorn and let the kids see what an original carousel ride was like. Behind this building is a modern play structure where kids can run around.

Other places children would find interesting:

  • The Fargo Air Museum offers a lot of history and some great hands on for kids. Children are able to climb into and play around with a helicopter cockpit, old war jeep and more.
  • The Children’s Museum at Yunker Farm has hands on exhibits, nature trails, a train and a carousel to enjoy.
  • Bonanzaville offers kids a view of life in pioneer times from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s.

With a little planning and compromise, parents and children will have a great time together on a trip to Fargo. The key is to work in activities that kids will enjoy to help prevent meltdowns while shopping.
